Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates will miss the majority of the season after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament while on international duty with Uruguay.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers already has defensive issues with the potential departure of Martin Skrtel a possibility as Napoli have expressed interest in the centre-back.
Coates injured himself playing for his country in a friendly match against Japan and the injury complements the already frail defensive situation at Anfield.
Centre-back Daniel Agger is reportedly a target for Barcelona whilst Martin Kelly is still unfit.
Liverpool need a partner for recent signing Kolo Toure and may look to make a second offer for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Tiago Ilori.
The Merseyside club have already made one bid for the Portuguese under-20 international believed to have been around £3million.
After the 20 year old refused to sign a new contract this summer, Sporting have put a £6million price on him.
Rodgers saw the positive side of Coates' misfortune and is still looking to strengthen his squad.
"It is something we are looking at. We need to strengthen our defence and maybe it could give the likes of Andre Wisdom a chance to develop," he told reporters.
Coates was originally set to miss six months but after the injury was assessed, it seems that time has increased.
