Nicloas Anelka has retired from football with immediate effect 49 days after joining the club, according to a number of reports .

He has just played one game for West Brom and is reported to have taken the big to retire.

Anelka looked sharp during pre-season and was also good during the first game against the Saints which the club lost 1-0.

West Brom revealed in an official statement that the striker will not be involved this weekend but didn't comment on speculation that he had left the club.

The reason wasn't disclosed on the site but according to journalist Chris Lepkowski, who covers West Brom for the Birmingham Mail tweeted on his account: "#wba insist Anelka has NOT retired. I understand his agent has died - which has hit him badly. What the future holds, we'll see."

If the Frenchman has retired, then West Brom will need to find a striker to fill Anelka's void before the transfer window closes.

Anelka has played for the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Arsenal in the past.
