Nicolas Anelka will miss Saturday’s game against Everton amid reports he could have already retired from the game.

West Bromwich Albion issued a statement saying that Anelka had left with their blessing, after initial reports suggested the Frenchman had walked out of training after telling the staff he was quitting the game altogether.

It has since been confirmed that Anelka’s agent Eric Manasse had passed away suddenly.

The tragic news would explain the veteran striker's unexpected decision and actions.  Although it will come as a huge loss for West Brom, the club have been quick to support the striker.

"West Bromwich Albion can confirm that Nicolas Anelka will not be involved in Saturday's game at Everton," their statement read.

"The club have excused the striker from club duty on compassionate grounds."

It’s not clear if the 34-year-old will remain at the club after joining from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua in July. However, West Brom fans will surely hope that he does return and soon, after having a fantastic pre-season scoring seven goals in the process.
