Manchester United have made an inquiry about the availability of Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata, reports the ESPN.

The Premier League champions have made an informal inquiry in hope of signing Chelsea's winger.

Chelsea as well as Manchester United insiders have told ESPN that David Moyes is keen to make the 25-year-old his marquee signing of the summer.

However, it is unclear whether the Red Devils want Mata to be included in a swap deal with England striker Wayne Rooney - if he was to leave Old Trafford - or whether they want to sign the Spaniard in a straight transfer deal.

However, Chelsea have clearly stated that the former Valencia star is not for sale this summer as the London club attempt to triumph the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho.

Mata, who has not assured regular football under Mourinho, started Chelsea's league opener against Hull City on bench.

But the playmaker-cum-winger is believed to be Roman Abramovich's one of the three favourite players at Chelsea and the Russian will not allow the Blues to sanction Mata's move to Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have made a late approach to sign Tottenham target Willian. Blues' interest to sign Anzhi winger has further cast doubt over Mata's future at the club.
