Manchester City handed timely injury boost

Manchester City have been handed a significant boost with the news that centre-back Matija Nastasic is set to return from injury ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash against Cardiff City.

The 20-year-old Serb, who arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Serie A outfit Fiorentina last summer, missed last Monday's emphatic 4-0 victory over Newcastle United after sustaining a troublesome ankle injury in the club's pre-season clash against Sunderland in July.

However, despite an initially negative prognosis that predicted an absence of up to six weeks, Nastasic has reportedly made excellent progress in recent days and he could be in line to feature in the Welsh capital on Sunday.

This positive news couldn't have come at a better time for City manager Manuel Pellegrini, as injuries to Micah Richards and captain Vincent Kompany have left the Chilean chronically short of defensive options.

Joleon Lescott is the only fully-fit centre-back currently in the squad and Pellegrini has been forced to deploy midfielder Javi Garcia as a makeshift defender.
