Five of the stupidest transfers ever (1)

Reports this week suggested Manchester United could be about to move for Chelsea star Juan Mata after the Blues hijacked Tottenham's signing of Willian.

As soon as it emerged that Jose Mourinho had ordered the Stamford Bridge officials to get involved with the Brazilian's nearly confirmed move to White Hart Lane, there was talk suggesting Mata could be on hi sway out.

Mourinho today denied that the Spain international was surplus to requirements, which is a sane standpoint to take, though managers denying a player is leaving is hardly any guarantee that this is what will happen.

Earlier this summer Mata was linked with a move to Barcelona and as part of a possible deal for Wayne Rooney, both of which would be complete and utter madness.

Mata has arguably been Chelsea's best player for the past two seasons and to let him leave would rank as possibly the stupidest transfer ever.

This got GMS thinking about other stupid transfers and we came up with five examples of a selling club getting brain freeze in the transfer market.
