Chelsea: Who will be in their final squad?

With the season now well under way and the transfer window beginning to reach its climax the time to finalize squads is very nearly here. New(ish) Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has said recently he aims for a 22 man squad as in his eyes that is the perfect amount to fight on all fronts whilst offering all the squad ample game time.

Because of the reduced number of spots and potential incoming players a few cuts to the roster will have to be made and with Mourinho confirming nobody is likely to be sold there are a few obvious loan candidates ready to free up some space.

Victor Moses had a very impressive pre season and will no doubt have plenty of suitors should the club make him available. The signing of Willian is looking very likely now and so an attacking mid is sure to leave and Moses is the obvious choice. Everton or West Brom would be the obvious choices for the player although I personally feel West Brom to be the better option.

The club will offer more game time and it will further the feeder relationship the two clubs developed last season. Also Steve Clark recently admitted, whilst confirming the loan of Man City’s Sinclair, he is looking to add more width to the Baggies team this season and a Sinclair/Moses pairing on the wings could be pretty devastating.

Demba Ba is the other obvious player to exit but that will undoubtedly rest on whether or not Rooney or any other striker comes in. I would happily see Ba leave the club, he really doesn't look like a top team striker. His positioning is awful, the timing of his runs is extremely poor as demonstrated in his five offsides against Villa on Wednesday and he hasn't exactly set the world alight in terms of goals scored. He played his part last season but Chelsea really need to upgrade him if the club has any hopes of the title.

Goalkeepers: Cech, Schwarzer, Hilario.

For one more season at least Courtois will remain in Spain but in Schwarzer the club has a top backup more than capable of being Cech’s number two until the young Belgian is deemed as needed at Chelsea.

Defence: Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Terry, Kalas, Cole, Bertrand.

There were some calls for a new CB to come in this summer but with Kalas impressing for Vitesse last season and establishing himself his international side it is pointless purchasing a young CB when the club has an excellent option ready to make the jump to the first team.

Mourinho has confirmed he is in his plans for the coming season and as an under 21 he doesn't have to be included in the first team squad. The rest of the defence picks itself and so far Mourinho has favoured a Cahill/Terry partnership with Ivanovic and Cole on the wings.

Central midfield: Ramires, Lampard, Essien, Mikel, Van Ginkel. So far Lampard/Ramires has looked like the main players to occupy the central two, Ramires limitless energy and Lamps technical ability, excellent passing range and of course goal threat make them a formidable pairing.

Mikel and Essien are solid back ups but both slow down play and both have a fairly limited passing range. Van Ginkel is the new addition and could be in for a big season as him, Lampard and Ramires could make up a very effective 433. Youngsters like Chalobah look set to feature unless the club loans them again but look for Ramires, Lampard and Van Ginkel as the main stays in the CM positions.

Attacking mids: Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Schurrle, Willian, De Bruyne.

By far the strongest area of the squad, Chelsea really do have an embarrassment of riches on the wings and at number 10. Hazard and Oscar seem to of cemented themselves a spot in the starting 11 and no doubt once Mata is back to full fitness the remaining role will go to him.

Schurrle and KDB look to be rotated through the three positions and with Willian coming in competition will be tight in that role. This can only mean good things for the Blues attack, any injury or weakness from a player in the three and there are several waiting in line to fill his spot.

Any worries over Mata’s place at Chelsea will be all but wiped out soon enough, the Spaniard is coming back from injury and within a month or so he will be back to full match fitness winning games all on his own.

Strikers: Torres, Lukaku, Ba/Rooney.

Torres seems to be first choice striker until he either stops performing or a marquee name comes in. Lukaku will be used the way West Brom did last season, making impact appearances from the bench and sealing games for the club trying to fight his way to be the main striker. Ba should be sold in my opinion and if Rooney comes in that will likely happen.
