We all have those people we look up to, role models, whether it be Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi in football, Usain Bolt or Mo Farah for athletics, or for cycling, how about Bradley Wiggins or Mark Cavendish?
Well, we all have them. So don't you think they should be careful with what they say? All this of course is about the use of helmets in cycling. There is a very blatant two-sided approach to wearing helmets: you either chose to wear one, or you chose to not one - it's up to you.
As a cyclist myself I can't see any reason why you would not wear a helmet, having known several people whose only deciding factor between life and death was the piece of carbon fiber wrapped across their head. Scary? Very much so.
The older generation of cyclists may have already made their mind up about whether they use helmets or not, but for the younger generation, they may not have made their mind up yet, or are open to a change of opinion.
To keep our youngsters safe, surely the leading role models in this sport should be promoting it? Well, maybe not. Jonathan Tiernan-Locke has recently been reported as saying he won't wear a helmet if he was going out somewhere nearby, which is fine. But what if the worst and, of course, unthinkable happened?
Knowing the dangers of not wearing a helmet, surely you should be promoting the use of safe kit. It begs the very question: why would you not wear a helmet? It's not like an extra burden, and could be the difference between real life and the afterlife!
Stars, heroes, role models, whatever you want to call them, surely have a duty - one simple duty - to do the right thing: to let people copy those right things, and one of those oh so simple little things is wearing a helmet.
Not hard, is it?
