Arsenal eye Liverpool target as Benzema back-up

Published 2 Comments

Arsenal are confident of landing Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema but are have lined up Liverpool target Diego Costa as a possible replacement.

According to El Confidencial, Arsene Wenger believes he can lure the France international to Emirates Stadium because of his ongoing contract situation and the treatment he has been receiving from the fans at Santiago Bernabeu.

However, the Gunners tactician is also keeping himself interested in the ongoing situation of Costa at Atletico Madrid, who is also being tracked by Liverpool.

The Brazilian recently signed a new contract at Vicente Calderon but the report in El Confidencial claims that Costa is aware that Atleti would still be open to selling if a substantial bid were to come in for him.

Liverpool were reported to have had a £21million bid rejected for him earlier this season and Brendan Rodgers even admitted that there was unlikely to be any agreement.

This latest report may offer the Anfield club renewed hope, but a lack of Champions League football could scupper their transfer intentions - not for the first time in this transfer window.

Despite Costa possibly being available, Arsenal still have their sights set on Benzema and hope the recent jeers and whistles he received from los Merengues in the win over Real Betis may push him towards the exit door.
