Manchester United's pursuit of Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini has resulted in Everton fans 'going mad', according to former Toffees star Mark Ward.

The Premier League leaders have ramped up their pursuit of the Everton duo as the transfer deadline edges ever closer, with a formal combined bid for the players submitted early this week.

Manchester United made an offer of £28 million for both players but this was immediately rejected by Everton, who went public to describe the approach as 'derisory and insulting'.

The conduct of former Everton manager David Moyes in pursuit of two of his former stars has not been viewed favourbly at Goodison Park, and Ward claims the Manchester United boss has ruffled numerous feathers on Merseyside.

“Evertonians are going mad at what they offered for those two players," he told talkSPORT.

“Everton signed Fellaini for £15m and, after what’s he’s done at the club, to offer only £1m on top, he’s worth £25m all day, and Baines is one of best left-backs in the world. You’ve got to be pushing £35-40m for those two.

“Moyes has upset a lot of people.”

It is unclear if Manchester United will return with an improved offer for Baines or Fellaini - or both - as Moyes strives to make reinforcements of note before the close of the transfer window on September 2.

Young Uruguayan Guillermo Varela has been the only recruit of the Moyes era so far.
