Arsenal victories paper over cracks

Arsenal have proven that the ‘crisis’ many people said the club was in never existed.

Two successive dominant wins away at Fenerbahce and Fulham have proven Arsenal are not facing impending doom, as many newspapers were happy to report; however, Arsenal still need to become active in the transfer window if they hope to challenge for the top four.

Arsenal got an impressive win at Craven Cottage on Saturday, despite having to field a heavily weakened squad due to injuries and suspensions. But the Gunners' next Premier League game won’t be so easy, as they face north London rivals Tottenham at home next Sunday.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he believes he will be able to hand one new signing a debut in the north London derby next week - but will he make the signings Arsenal need?

Arsenal are in desperate need for a striker and are also in need of a defender and goalkeeper, but the one bid Wenger have made since the embarrassing home loss to Aston Villa was for a midfielder: Yohan Cabaye.

Many feel the bid for Cabaye was made an attempt to appease Arsenal fans angry at their club's transfer dealing this summer.

The easiest and quickest signing for Arsenal would be Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who has been transfer listed by relegated QPR. Cesar is said to be desperate for a move to Arsenal in this World Cup year.

Angel Di Maria could also arrive this week with Real Madrid looking to offload him due to the imminent arrival of Gareth Bale, which would leave him far down the pecking order for a starting position.

Arsenal are reportedly willing to pay £26m for Di Maria and are said to be willing to pay £35m for Di Maria’s Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema.

Benzema, who was booed off the pitch in Madrid’s first game of the season, is unwilling to move away from the Spanish having finally earned to right to be Real’s first-choice striker.

Although an Arsenal move for Benzema is unlikely, reports say that the move could happen if Luis Suarez moves to Madrid.
