Manchester City has made some of the top moves in this summer's transfer window so far.

Jesus Navas was a great acquisition. He's someone who can thrive in the Premier League, using his pace and ability to beat defenders and deliver dangerous crosses to their attacking weapons.

Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo are also valuable signings and it is hard to acquire a solid holding-midfielder such as Fernandinho.

They might have spent a lot and not got the best deals, but this is Manchester City. Since the new owner arrived, money has not been one of the worries.

However, defensive depth is. There were obvious holes in today's match against newly promoted Cardiff City.

For one, Javi Garcia looked like a boy amongst men and very uncomfortable. He was unsuccessful defending aerial balls and at times he just looked lost.

It's unfair to judge him too much because centre back is not his primary position. Still, it is disconcerting that with Nastacic and Vincent Kompany sitting out, they had only one other centre back they were comfortable using.

That centre back is Joleon Lescott, who has been abysmal since his move to Manchester City in 2009.

It is safe to say that he has probably been City's worst transfer in the money era. His performance wasn't quite as bad as Garcia's, but it was not worthy of more playing time either. He looked slow, and was unable to provide the same physical presence that captain Vincent Kompany does when he is in the lineup.

The wing backs were poor as well, but they at least have options in those positions. With Richards, Zabaleta, Clichy, and Kolarov, this is not an immediate issue, and likely not an issue at all.

So City needs to beef up the depth at centre back. The starters are fine. The backups, not so much. Schalke's Kyriakos Papadopoulos is one viable option, as is Napoli's Cannavaro. If Manchester City could sign Papadopoulos, they would be set with at least one solid backup for the foreseeable future. He would work well with both Nastacic and Kompany. Regardless of who they get though, they need somebody.

After an embarrassing performance against the Bluebirds, City fans have to demand a new acquisition in the defense to solve the problem of allowing three goals in a game against a team like Cardiff.
