Tottenham have received a separate offer in addition to the world record £86 million bid made by Spanish giants Real Madrid, sources at the North London club have revealed.

Madrid's summer-long pursuit of Bale looked to be coming to an end after it was revealed last night that a world record fee had been agreed between the two clubs and it was expected the Welshman would be a Real player within 48 hours.

However, news this morning that Spurs had received an additional offer has momentarily put that news into scrutiny.

The second bidder is unknown but reigning Premier League champions Manchester United have expressed an interest in the Welsh forward earlier this summer.

The diminutive wideman had a memorable season last year scoring 26 goals along the way as he picked up both the Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers last season.

It was made clear earlier this summer that Bale wanted a move to the Spanish capital and it remains likely, despite this counter bid, he will be a Real player before the window slams shut on September 2.

Madrid's summer spending is already in excess of £50 million after bringing in Spanish midfield duo  Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad and Malaga's Isco, so a deal for Bale would take their spending to nearly £140 million - a quite extravagant figure indeed.
