Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is looking at Wigan midfielder James McCarthy to bolster his squad, as speculation over Yohan Cabaye's future rumbles on.
The 22-year-old has long been linked with a transfer to Everton to reunite with former boss Roberto Martinez, but could be on his way to St James' Park if Arsenal's move for Cabaye goes through. The Toon are reportedly considering an £8million offer.
Irish midfielder McCarthy was part of Wigan's victorious FA Cup win over Manchester City and has long been touted for a move to a bigger club, with speculation escalating following the club's relegation from the Premier League.
However, Wigan are looking for a fee of up to £15m in order to part with one of their star men, money which Pardew could raise with the sale of Frenchman Cabaye.
“You can’t say he is definitely going to stay, so the mindset of the player is such, that we need to be on guard," Pardew said speaking to the Chronicle.
"We are on the case with that. We have to be armed. We need to resolve it. If he goes, good luck to him. Bye, bye. We need to replace him with somebody as good."
Cabaye hasn't featured in either of Newcastle's opening two matches after Arsenal made a bid of around £10m for the midfielder prior to the Magpies match with Manchester City, and he is widely tipped to join Arsene Wenger's men before the transfer deadline.
