Athletico Madrid have reached out to Chelsea for a possible loan move for Spanish international Juan Mata, according to Spanish paper AS.
According to the paper, a representative from the Spanish side is currently in London to thrash out a deal with Chelsea for the player.
After the departure of Radamel Falcao to Monaco for a fee of around £50 million, Madrid are looking to add quality players to carry the burden their former Colombian goal machine had so easily shouldered and they see Mata as the perfect companion for David Villa to carry the team forward.
The Spanish side is also set to lose disgruntled forward Adrian Lopez as the 25-year-old looks set to leave the club to join Italian side Roma.
Mata had joined Chelsea on a £23.5 million from Valencia in the summer of 2011 and has won the Player of the Year award at the club for the last two consecutive seasons.
However the arrival of Jose Mourinho at the dugout has changed the dynamics at the club and Mata now finds himself to no longer be the first choice for his preferred role behind the striker, with Mourinho keeping the player in the bench in the season opener against Hull City.
And with the arrival of Willian, Mourinho now has a wealth of options in front of him for the attacking midfield roles in the team. Oscar, Willian, Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard can all play in Mata's position and the Spaniard could see his playing time significantly reduced this season.
