Former Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Deco has announced that he has retired from football. The Brazil-born Portuguese turns 36-years-old today but after his fourth hamstring injury this season, has called time on his illustrious career.
Deco says that his physical condition doesn't allow him to continue to play while his current club Fluminense want him to carry on until the end of the season.
In a statement, Deco said: "I would love to be able to help more Fluminense, but my body would not let me. I devoted myself, I struggled a lot and supported myself to continue until the end of the year. Physically could play, but my muscles do not support more "
The diminutive midfielder has played for the big clubs like Barcelona, Chelsea FC and Porto before heading to Brazil to carry on his career with Fluminense.
He has scored a total of 42 goals in 393 appearances for his country and clubs with 79 assists to his name and 105 yellow cards.
He retired from International football after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
