Arsenal confirmed their place in the Champions League group stage after a comfortable 2-0 win over Fenerbahce, which sealed a 5-0 aggregate victory.

It is the sixteenth consecutive season that Arsenal have qualified and in truth it was never in doubt. However, the win came at a cost for the Gunners, with both Lukas Podolski and Aaron Ramsey having to be taken off due to injuries.

Arsenal went into the game knowing that progression to the next stage was already virtually confirmed, following a 3-0 victory a week ago.

Aaron Ramsey, who scored in Istanbul, got the ball rolling for the Gunners in the 25th minute, as he calmly slotted the ball home from inside the six yard box. The Welshman was in the right place to slot home, after a misplaced tackle pushed the ball in his path.

He then added his second in the 72nd minute, to confirm Arsenal’s passage to the group stage.

After good link up play down the Gunners left, Ramsey got on the end of Jack Wilshere’s cross and expertly dispatched the ball into the far corner, to heap more misery on the Turkish outfit.

To their credit, Fenerbahce did show some signs of promise in the match, with Emanuel Eminike and Christian both hitting the Arsenal woodwork.

That aside, they rarely troubled the home sides back line, and for such a big team, they struggled to impose themselves on the game.

It was a commanding performance from Arsene Wenger’s side, who will now turn their attention to the north London derby on Sunday.

His only concern from the match will be the extent of the injuries that forced Lukas Podolski and Aaron Ramsey out of the game. There were also worrying signs for Jack Wilshere, who has been plagued by injuries, as he received several kicks to his troublesome ankle.
