Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has applauded the club's fans for their continued support of Wayne Rooney.

Rooney has been the main talking point this summer with Chelsea making no secret of wanting to sign the England striker but it looks likely that he will stay at Old Trafford, something Vidic thinks the fans are responsible for.

Rooney received a warm reception from United fans in the 0-0 stalemate with Chelsea on Monday night, even putting a man of the match performance in to prove his loyalty firmly remains with United.

As reported in The Metro, Vidic says: "I don’t think there was any question he’d have been supported. Wayne has been supported throughout the years.

‘He has scored so many goals and won so many trophies — I expected him to get a good reception. The fans have always supported the players. Wayne is no different.

Being as big of a player as Rooney is and with how public Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been in the transfer saga, his United future will remain to be speculated upon right up until the final second of the transfer deadline day next week but Vidic, like many others, remains convinced that Rooney will stay and continue his already magnificent United career into an even longer and prosperous one.

"Wayne has trained really well and when he starts a few games he’ll be really good.

"I’m excited for him — he can have a good season and has the World Cup as well," said Vidic.
