With 32 La Liga titles and a formidable nine European Cups to their name, Real Madrid are unquestionably one of world football's most-prestigious outfits. In recent years, however, the club have become just as renowned for their lavish spending as their success on the pitch. 

Real have always sought to attract top talent, but under the stewardship of current president Florentino Perez the club have actively embarked upon the so-called 'Galactico era', with every summer usually featuring the arrival of at least one global star. The subject of 2013's predictably protracted transfer pursuit is Tottenham winger Gareth Bale and the Welshman is reportedly on the verge of moving to the Santiago Bernabeu for a world record sum.
