£32m and he won't even be a regular starter for Chelsea. I don't know what Jose Mourinho is doing, but if you look at the current midfielders for Chelsea it seems ludicrous to sign Willian.
Already Chelsea have Eden Hazard, Oscar, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, Marco van Ginkel, Andre Schurrle, Victor Moses, Kevin De Bruyne, John Obi Mikel, Juan Mata and now Willian. Also, according to Sky Sources, they're in advanced talks to sign FC Porto winger Christian Atsu.
Why so many players? With only five players to choose from for midfield each game, players are going to get frustrated about lack of game time and will want to leave. Already Mourinho has isolated arguably Chelsea's best player, Juan Mata. This is crazy from the former Real Madrid manager. Also, David Luiz hasn't had a look in so far this season.
Sometimes it's good to have competition for places but I think Mourinho is going too far. The signing of Willian was just made so their London rivals Tottenham don't sign him.
They don't really need Willian, do they?
Against Manchester United on Monday night, Mourinho didn't even start with a recognised striker. You've got Romelu Lukaku sitting on the bench - anyone with a football brain could see that he was perfect for that game. Having scored a hat-trick against United last season Lukaku would have been ideal with his pace, presence and sheer power, but Mourinho brought on the misfiring Fernando Torres instead.
With 11 "Premier League quality" midfielders in his team, Mourinho is going to struggle to keep them all happy. Expect some players to leave on loan for a season, while the likes of Moses, Van Ginkel, Mikel and even Mata might want to leave for new pastures.
