Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has conceded that his side will never be able to buy Juan Mata, because Chelsea won't let them.
The Metro reports that AVB is of the opinion that Chelsea wouldn't allow Mata to join Tottenham due to the fact that they consider his side title rivals.
Despite Jose Mourinho insisting that Mata is not for sale at any price, the Spaniard has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this transfer window.
Arsenal and Manchester United have both been linked with offers for the 25-year-old, and Spurs were thought to be the third party interested in acquiring his services. AVB though is adamant that a deal would never be finalised.
"First, Chelsea wouldn’t sell to Tottenham in any way or form, as they think that we are title contenders," the Tottenham boss said.
"Mata is a great, great player – player of the season last season – very, very important player for Chelsea.
"They’re just not going to strengthen another team that, in their opinion, are rivals for the title."
Villas-Boas is in the market for an attacking midfielder after losing out on the signing of Willian to Jose Mourinho at the last minute, and has sounded at Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen as potential replacements.
