With Gareth Bale's proposed £86 million move from Spurs to Real Madrid now apparently seeming likelier by the second, GiveMeSport looks at five big money transfers that just didn't work out for club or player.

The beautiful game of football has always been mad but it's now officially even crazier as the Welsh wing-wizard is set to break the world transfer record previously set by Los Blancos after they paid Manchester United £80 million for the services of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

No player should ever be worth such a ridiculous amount of money, but unfortunately that's the way football has gone in recent times.

Therefore, in context to today's game, you'd have to say that Ronaldo is worth the money after becoming such a dominant force and integral part of world football.

Unfortunately, not all these big money moves start or end happily.

GiveMeSport gives you five prime examples of these now.
