Liverpool are set to renew their interest in Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori after a £3m bid for the centre-back was rejected earlier this summer.

The Reds are short of defenders after summer-signing Kolo Toure, who joined the club on a free transfer, was taken off with a groin problem in Tuesday's Capital One Cup victory over Notts County.

Brendan Rodgers will be without the Uruguayan international defender Sebastian Coates, after he was recently ruled out for six months with a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained during an international friendly against Japan.

Ilori is a Portuguese Under-20 international and has shown significant progress in the last year, having become a regular starter in the Sporting back-line; however, he has not been included so far this season.

According to The ExpressSporting chief executive Bruno de Carvalho is willing to let the Merseyside club re-open talks to discuss a new deal to bring the London-born player to Anfield.

Liverpool should be willing to meet the asking price now that they have concerning defensive gaps.

Martin Skrtel is set to return from injury in time for Sunday's clash against champions Manchester United at Anfield. Daniel Agger and Andre Wisdom are the the only fit central defenders currently available.
