Alex McCarthy

Football News

Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy's rise to prominence has certainly been hard-earned. The 23-year-old was sent out on loan eight times by the Royals early in his career, with the dominant performances of Australian international Adam Federici preventing him from truly establishing his position at the Madejski Stadium.

Injury troubles hampered the Reading academy product during the club's short spell in the Premier League last season, but McCarthy was still the attention of lavish media praise towards the end of the campaign after a series of tremendous individual performances.

He earned his first Three Lions call-up in May for the fixtures against Republic of Ireland and Brazil, but did not feature in either match. Having been linked to a number of top-flight clubs during the summer transfer window, McCarthy may need to move on to fulfil his England ambitions.
