Top five: Champions League groups of death (1)

As a host of top European clubs prepare for the draw for the group stages of the Champions League later today amid an inevitably irrelevant build up, there will no doubt be some clubs that managers will be desperate to avoid.

The term 'group of death' is bandied about far too often in modern day football, but sometimes there are four teams put together who could all potentially win the tournament, let alone just cause problems in the group stages.

There are also some places in Europe where, despite the team not being amongst the favourites for the competition, managers hate to visit. Some of the hostile atmospheres and harsh winters seen in these places make an away day at Stoke seem like a picnic. 

Here, we look at five of the toughest groups constructed in the last five seasons, in preparation for any horror-draws we may see in this years competition.
