Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is fast running out of time to make an important signing that will strengthen his squad.

With a number of strong teams vying for the Premier League title this season, a drastic buy is required by Wenger if Arsenal want to contest the title favourites.

After the pressure was easing up on Wenger to make a signing, Lukas Podolski's hamstring injury has dumped him right back in the transfer market.

Juan Mata is the most recent name on the lips of the Arsenal manager - he has expressed that he 'likes' the Chelsea midfielder - but with the transfer window soon coming to an end, Wenger will need to pick up pace if he has any chance of making a substantial addition to his Arsenal squad.

Arsenal fans are desperate for Wenger to invest in new players after interest in buying Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez failed to materialise.

Wenger expressed his frustration at the lack of signings Arsenal have made in this transfer window.

Speaking to ESPN.com, Wenger said: "I cannot tell you more than that we are on the market. Everybody knows, the whole world knows that now."

Wenger has made his second signing of the summer, but still hasn't spent money as he lands Arsenal old-boy, Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer.

The Gunners manager would do well to take a leaf out of their north London rivals' book.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has launched a revolution at Spurs with a number of record signings after the imminent departure of Gareth Bale.

AVB is set to bolster his team with the £30 million signing of Roma's Erik Lamela and £26 million signing of Roberto Soldado, putting Tottenham as strong contenders in the title race.

There is quite bit of negativity surrounding Arsenal's chances of pushing for the 2013/14 championship, and with a trophy cabinet that has remained empty for eight years, it's understandable.

Arsenal are running out of time to strengthen their paper-thin squad, and Wenger must act now or risk extending their trophy-less spell even further.
