This is a contest that is normally filled with goals, controversy, with players and manager's tempers often reach boiling point. So why has this fixture disappointed this time?
The match was played with the same passion as it always is but both teams lacked that special something in front of goal despite Manchester United naming Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in their starting 11.
I understand why Chelsea were no threat to United's goal because they did not name a recognised striker in their side which suggests Jose Mourinho may have set his team to draw and because it was his first game against a big club and he did not want to lose so he may have felt playing out a 0-0 draw was the safest option.
Instead of an out and out striker he named Andre Schurrle as his forward who is a player with an eye for goal but does not always finish his chances as he only scored 18 goals in 65 games for his former club, Bayer Leverkusen so it was clear that Mourinho only put him in the team because he is a quick winger who would help counter United's defence with his raw speed.
Manchester United were clearly looking for goals as they named last season's top scorer, Robin van Persie and one of their most trusted players Wayne Rooney who can always conjure up a goal when it matters. Despite these two players being on the field Manchester United failed to score and their best chance of the game fell to Danny Welbeck who blazed high and wide when a glorious chance was put on a plate for him.
Robin van Persie may have been extremely lively last week against a strong Swansea side but in this fixture it was if he didn't turn up and he was rarely in the game and got very few chances to score or even touch the and this was probably due to the fact that Wayne Rooney was bossing the match.
Rooney was at the heart of all of United's attacks and the Rooney that was playing that night was the Rooney we know and love. He had a couple of decent attempts from 30 yards and was constantly tracking back and made an outstanding slide tackle on Ramires after he had been left in acres of space by Evra and Rooney's clearance after the tackle set up a counter attack which in the end turned to nothing.
The United fans cheered Rooney from his first touch to his last and he could do no wrong and it now looks like he may have decided to stay because I think he has realised he is still loved by this amazing club.
Before this match I predicted a 2-2 and it turns out I was wrong, but I believe Mourinho set up to draw this game 0-0 and he certainly succeeded.
The football fan inside me is annoyed he wanted to draw because I think all football fans would have wanted to have seen a goal fest with the ball at one end and then in a matter of seconds it be at the other so I am hoping that the next time these two giants meet it will live up to expectations.
