Paris Saint-Germain defender and reported Liverpool target Mamadou Sakho is now the subject of late interest from Italian side Roma, according to the Daily Star.
Sakho had been widely tipped to join Brendan Rodgers at Anfield but now it seems the Reds have competition for the powerful centre-back.
The France international handed in a transfer request to Laurent Blanc at the beginning of the month and with the World Cup on the horizon, Sakho wants to be guaranteed first-team football to have a chance of starting for France, should they qualify.
Rodgers has been keen to strengthen his back line following the injury to Uruguayan Sebastian Coates and that need will have only been made greater by further injuries to defenders Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho during the Capital One Cup victory over Notts County on Tuesday night.
However despite Sakho's wish to leave the club, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi told L'Equipe of his desire to keep the defender at the club.
He said: "Sakho is a child of the club, just like Steven Gerrard is at Liverpool.
"It is hard to imagine him wearing another team's jersey and I'm a little surprised that he wants to leave.
"I had a discussion with him. My position is very clear and he knows it, we want to keep him and we will do everything to achieve that."
