Liverpool are preparing an offer for Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, according to reports.
The Daily Star claims Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is eager to bring the 21-year-old to Anfield, and will make an initial loan offer with a fee guaranteed at the end of the season.
Papadopoulos, who has been linked with a move to Merseyside in the past, missed a large part of last season through injury, and had an operation on his knee back in November.
The 16-cap Greek international has subsequently returned to fitness, and the paper claims ‘a flurry of activity’ to try and sign the player could follow.
Schalke are happy to talk with interested parties, but reports in Germany claim the Bundesliga side want cash upfront rather than a structured deal. They want £13million for the centre back.
"There are a lot of clubs to take into account,” said sporting director Horst Heldt.
"We're going to speak to each other when it takes concrete form.”
Liverpool have endured a summer of change at the back, with club legend Jamie Carragher retiring at the end of last season.
Kolo Toure was drafted in as his immediate replacement, and the Ivorian has made a fine start to the Premier League season at the heart of the Reds defence.
Papadopoulos would given the Northern Irishman another option at centre back,
