Liverpool could be set to make a surprise move for Aston Villa's goalkeeper Shay Given
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants an experienced understudy for £9m new boy Simon Mignolet, according to reports from the Guardian.
The newspaper has reported that Rodgers wants to bring more experience into that position following the departure of Spanish No. 1 Pepe Reina to Napoli on a season-long loan deal.
Rodgers feels the 37-year-old goalkeeper would improve the quality of his back-up goalkeepers.
The Guardian also report that Rodgers wants to strengthen the quality of his squad's defence. Liverpool have reopened talks with Sporting Lisbon over the signing of central defender Thiago Llori.
A move from Given to Anfield would give the team's defence solid reinforcement. After losing his place as Aston Villa No. 1 to Brad Guzan last season, an offer from Liverpool could be tempting. The veteran 'keeper has been told he can leave Villa Park this summer.
With the transfer window nearing an end, Rodgers will have to pick up the pace in a bid to sign the Premier League veteran.
