Manchester United have failed in their first attempt to bring Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera to Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old midfielder has a release clause in his contract of £30.75million, and United's bid, in the region of £25million, was turned down immediately by Bilbao, as it fell short of this valuation.
It is unclear at this time whether the Manchester club are lining up a second, improved offer.
This failure continues what has been a frustrating first transfer window for new boss David Moyes, who has yet to unveil any mouth-watering signings to his fans. He will be keen to do so, and with only a few days left of this transfer window, it is likely that activity at Old Trafford will begin to fire up.
There are already murmurings from the fans that Moyes lacks the killer-edge of his predecessor in the transfer market, having failed thus far to lure any of his key targets, including Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines who played under him at Everton, to Manchester United.
New arrivals at United before the end of next Monday are virtually assured, as Moyes will not want to be seen to have failed in the window, but the quality of these signings is unknown. With the pressure on and no progress to speak of thus far, there is always the potential to panic-buy as time begins to run out.
United fans, will the barren transfer spell continue, or will Moyes come up with the goods before the end of the window? Are you concerned at your club's lack of signings? Is there a danger that Moyes could panic-buy, in an attempt to avoid criticism and ensure he has at least done some business? Post your comments in the box provided below.
