Manchester United have submitted a £10 million bid for the Italy international Daniele de Rossi, according to the Daily Star.
De Rossi was in line to secure a move away from his club AS Roma, with Chelsea looking as his most preferred destination.
But, the new American owners have apparently persuaded the Italian to stay at the club, and so were obliged to inform De Rossi when the bid was submitted.
Reports suggest that De Rossi has "flatly refused" to switch to Manchester United, with the Italian having no desire to work with David Moyes.
It is believed that the bid was made for the midfielder on the suggestion of former England coach Fabio Capello. United are desperate to sign a creative midfielder, having missed out on their targets of Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas.
With the pursuit of Marouane Fellaini also apparently going nowhere, United have turned to uncharted territories to achieve their transfer target.
But De Rossi looks unlikely to leave Roma, even if United return with an increased bid.
Kaka has also expressed his desire to leave Real Madrid, and United will love to sign him as a possible replacement of Paul Scholes.
