Chelsea fans were left devastated last night after narrowly losing to Champions League winners Bayern Munich, in the UEFA Super Cup Final.
Chelsea took the early lead in the 8th minute after Fernando Torres swept a shot past Manuel Neuer. But early in the 2nd half, Munich struck back through Franck Ribery, curling the ball into the near post of Petr Cech's goal.
Chelsea lost midfielder Ramires after he was sent off in the 85th minute for a dangerous challenge. By the 90th minute it was still 1-1 so extra-time beckoned.
Three minutes in, Eden Hazard put Chelsea in front again. But in one of the last kicks of the game, Javi Martinez scored to put Munich back on level terms. The game was to be decided by penalties.
Both teams put their first four penalties away, Xherdan Shaqiri then made it 5 for Munich. Recently returned Romelu Lukaku then missed his penalty to hand Munich the trophy.
After the match, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho spoke to the press, insisting that his team should have won the match.
"The best team clearly lost," he said. "They just scored one more penalty."
He then added: "The best team played with 10 men for a long, long period in the game. They played against the champions of Europe and they were the best team, we only have reasons to be proud, to believe in the future. But I prefer just to say the best team lost and stay with it."
