Arsenal look set to spend big on Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil, according to various sources.
The news will come as a massive relief to Arsenal fans who have been worried about the club's lack of marquee signings this summer with deals for the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Gustavo and Luis Suarez not coming to fruition.
With Arsenal sitting on a massive pot of cash, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been under intense pressure to spend all summer from Arsenal supporters with the Frenchman defiantly batting away questions about signing, or a need for further acquisitions.
However, they seem to have got their wish with Arsenal now in advanced talks over a £42.5million deal for the Germany international who has made a lasting impression at Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Wenger was buoyant after their victory over Tottenham and will have excited fans by suggesting they could be in for a surprise - possibly being Ozil. Wenger said: "You will see what we will announce. If we sign someone I promise that we will be very quick to announce it, but maybe we have a good surprise for you."
Ozil's future has been under a lot of speculation all summer due to the arrivals of former Malaga playmaker Isco and world record player Gareth Bale, adding further competition in the forward areas, along with - the now - former world record player Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine Angel di Maria.
Manchester United and PSG are other clubs who have been credited with an interest in the former Werder Bremen man, but according to some reports, the wages offered by Arsenal were the decisive factor in any possible deal for the 24-year-old with United offering €5million a year, in comparison to Arsenal's €7million a year.
The impending signing of Mesut Ozil means he will join a club already possessing an array of midfield talent such as Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta among others. It remains to be seen where Ozil will be deployed, but it is expected he will play as the offensive midfielder with Cazorla on the left in a role that he excels in.
The deal has surprised many, with the belief that Arsenal are in need of a combative defensive midfielder, while they aren't exactly short of creative midfielders. However, Ozil holds an impressive record being the highest assisting player in Europe in the last three seasons setting up a staggering 87 goals in that time.
