This weekend will see some old foes in the Premier League square up against each other in a battle rekindled every season.

Rivalry exists among a host of teams in the Premier league, especially among teams that share proximity with each other.

However, a critical look at the league reveals the top five biggest derby rivalries between clubs currently in the Premier League.

1. Liverpool vs Manchester United

Matches between Manchester United and Liverpool are listed among the most highly-rated rivalries in football, in and outside the Premier League.

Meetings between both clubs in the Premier League also called the north-west derby are usually explosive encounters with the stadiums filled to capacity, silhouetted in a frenzy atmosphere.

Both Manchester United and Liverpool used to be among the big four clubs in England. But Liverpool have of late been edged out of that position and are struggling to regain their former form.

Notwithstanding, expectations run high and pride is at stake whenever both sides meet.

With Liverpool gunning for a return to the top four this season, the weekend's north-west derby promises to be exhilarating.

2. Manchester City vs Manchester United

Also known as 'the Manchester derby', rivalry between both Manchester clubs is one of the continent’s biggest rivalries.

The rivalry extends beyond the field-of-play into the social life at Greater Manchester where two of the world's biggest clubs are based.

The matches between City and United are best compared to the "El Classico" clash between Spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Both sides have met 165 times. United have won 69 times, with City managing 46 wins and the duel ending in a stalemate 50 times.

3.Everton vs Liverpool

The Meyseyside derby, as this is called, is always a thrilling encounter between both Liverpool clubs.

Liverpool have been the dominating team, winning 85 times, while Everton have managed to win 65 times, with the game ending in a deadlock on 63 occasions.

4. Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur

Arsenal and Tottenham are set to lock horns this weekend in what happens to be the 174th north London derby.

Arsenal have prevailed over Spurs 72 times, while Spurs have won in 54 derby games, with both teams sharing the points 45 times.

5. Arsenal vs Chelsea

Both clubs were never considered strong rivals until recently when Chelsea became a dominant force in English football.

Both sides have met 179 times in the London derby with Arsenal coming out triumphant 68 times, while Chelsea have won in 59 encounters. The duel has been drawn 52 times.
