Ozil to Arsenal a waste of a signing

Finally, Arsene Wenger has shown some bottle in the transfer window, but he has made the wrong signing.

With German star Mesut Ozil only a medical away from being confirmed, Arsene Wenger must be in high spirits; on the back of a derby day win, it looks as though he has bagged Arsenal’s first signing of the window, but I believe it’s a poor one.

Wenger simply doesn’t need another midfield player. The £40million committed to the Ozil deal would be better spent on a striker or defender.

Ozil is undoubtedly class, but Arsenal already have Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky in the same position, all of whom are on their day unplayable.

Arsenal fans should still be worried about the lack of reliability in their defence, with Per Mertesacker a distance off the pace, and Lauren Koscielny unreliable.

If Olivier Giroud gets injured, then Wenger doesn’t have another proven striker. Arguably Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski can play there, but that is not their primary position.

This signing does show intention though, and Arsenal fans will feel a great amount of relief now that they have spent some money.

Arsenal do though still have time to make another signing, with just over 10 hours left in the transfer window though they can’t hang about.

Right now all I hope for is that they don’t waste yet more money on midfielders, and should focus now on improving their defence.
