Belgian referee awards bizarre penalty

Published Add your comment

We have seen some bad decisions in the Premier League over the years but none have been as shocking as the one above by Belgian referee Dieter Van Esch.

Van Esch, who was officiating a game between Geel FC and Royal Antwerp, decided to hand the former side a penalty despite the foul blatantly taking place outside the area.

Royal Antwerp, who are managed by Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, ended up drawing the match as Geel's Gideon Boateng consequently netted from the spot.
