Mark Hughes has added Stephen Ireland to his Stoke City side as the end of the transfer window draws nearer.

The Aston Villa midfielder hasn't made an appearance for their first-team since January and was made aware that he was not in Paul Lambert's immediate plans, so Stoke have swooped in on the former Manchester City man.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes is a big admirer of the midfielder having worked with him during his time in charge of City and he was keen for the player to sign, and now he has on a season-long loan deal after he passed his medical at Clayton Wood today.

The 27-year-old was keen to leave Villa in search of first-team football and Hughes can offer him that.

Ireland is the second Stoke signing to be announced today after Hughes made the late night signing of Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen last night on a four-year-deal for £2 million.

Winger Michael Kightly looks to be on his way out after Hughes has made him available for around £2 million, Kightly has now been made surplus to requirements at the Britannia Stadium since the arrival of Oussama Assaidi, so Stoke City could be looking at as many outs as ins in the next few hours.

The Potters also missed out on Peter Odemwingie after he signed for Cardiff in a deal believed to be around £2 million.
