Former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy 'Duke' Morrison unfortunately passed away in a Nebraska hospital late on Sunday night, according to USA Today.
Morrison was known for his exciting fighting style and punching power and also starred alongside Sylvester Stallone in the 1990 boxing movie Rocky V.
Morrison reportedly tested positive for HIV in 1996 and was forced to retire from boxing. He later denied having the virus and was even licensed to box again in West Virginia and Mexico in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
He had notable fights with the likes of Lennox Lewis, Michael Bentt, George Foreman and an absolutely fantastic up and down bout with Donovan 'Razor' Ruddock.
Morrison is the kind of fighter that the heavyweight division would welcome with open arms right now. He could punch and he was willing to get into a brawl despite having a somewhat fragile chin. His fights very rarely went the distance, although he did show some good boxing skills to outbox an admittedly old Foreman and take the decision and the vacant WBO Heavyweight Championship in 1993.
Morrison leaves behind wife Trisha and one child to an earlier marriage. He also claimed by some to be the great nephew of Hollywood star John Wayne, whose real name was Marion Morrison.
