Andros Townsend may seem an unlikely inclusion in the England senior squad, but he believes he 'deserves' it.
Townsend stormed to prominence after an impressive loan spell at Queens Park Rangers last season, and has continued his good form in two starts this term for Tottenham. Despite Spurs adding to their ranks with Nacer Chadil and Erik Lamela, Townsend has impressed and managed to keep his place in the side.
And now, England manager Roy Hodgson has deemed him ready for the rigours of international football, where he will make the step up from under-21's to the senior side. Townsend will be available for selection in the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.
“The call-up is a fantastic reward for my start to the season but I know I’m not the finished article. I’ve got to go there and prove myself and hopefully I can get my first cap. It’s nice to have recognition for doing so well at your club," he told the Evening Standard.
Townsend spent the second half of last season on loan at QPR, and although he didn't manage to steer them clear of relegation, he was certainly one of the stand out performers.
“The England manager saw a few of my games last season so I knew I was on his radar.
“Going to QPR really matured me. I’ve come back this season and I’m ready to play and be involved. The manager has put faith in me in the first few games and I’m looking to continue that," he continued.
Townsend's club manager Andre Villas-Boas wasn't so thrilled with the manner in which Hodgson called upon the youngster's services. “I wasn’t contacted in any way or form by Roy Hodgson and I would’ve preferred to give my opinion on the fact that he gets called up so soon,” he said.
England take on Moldova at Wembley this Friday before facing a trip to Kiev the following Tuesday for an all important clash with Ukraine.
