Another eventful transfer window has come to an end with Tottenham and Real Madrid spending more money than any other club in world football.

For Real Madrid, spending over £100m in a transfer window is nothing new but for Tottenham it's all brand new.

Their summer recruitment drive included no less than seven international players including the highly rated Erik Lamela.

Spurs fans have been delighted to see the new faces come flooding in a White Hart Lane and, despite losing to Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday, remain confident of sealing a top four place.

But spending money doesn't always guarantee success and big money signings don't always work out.

Here we look at five spending sprees that didn't pay dividends.
