Arsenal failed with a surprise offer for Udinese captain Antonio Di Natale on deadline day, according to the Daily Star.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who pulled off arguably the day's biggest coup in the shape of talented playmaker Mesut Ozil, was also reportedly keen to supplement his striking options and is believed to have identified the 35-year-old experienced Italian as a potential solution.

Any deal for Di Natale is believed to have been dependent on Udinese being able to secure a suitable replacement which, due to the timing of the bid, seemingly wasn't possible.

Di Natale, who has been at Stadio Friuli for nine years since moving from Empoli in 2004, won 42 caps for his native Italy during an international career that spanned ten years.

Arsenal's failure to provide adequate competition to French striker Olivier Giroud may come as a disappointment to many of the club's supporters, but most will surely be content with the signing of Ozil from Real Madrid.

The fee to bring the German international is believed to be in the region of £42.4 million, almost tripling the fee Arsenal paid for Russian midfielder Andrey Arshavin in 2009.
