Zubizarreta: Barcelona will succeed without defender signing

Barcelona's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta believes the club will succeed this season, despite not signing a defender.

Brazilian star Neymar was signed by the Catalan outfit earlier in the summer but, after being heavily linked to a number of centre-backs, Barcelona didn't add to their defensive options.

After Barcelona's 7-0 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in last year's Champions League semi-final, it had been expected that they would improve at the back.

However, the Spanish giants will now have to chose between Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique and Marc Bartra for the centre-back positions for this season.

Holding-midfielders Alex Song and Javier Mascherano have also slotted in at the back on occasions for the Nou Camp outfit.

And, the club's sporting director is more than happy with the side, as he told reporters: "In the history of Barcelona, the signing of a centre-back has always been complicated.

"We have the squad we wanted and one that will be able to compete extraordinarily well.

"We are always focused on making the squad the best it can be and I am delighted to have the chance to do my job."

Barcelona conceded two goals in their last La Liga outing as they beat Valencia 3-2 at the Mestalla last weekend.
