Midfielders are a vital cog in a side that aspirations to challenge for trophies as they are responsible for helping in both the defensive and attacking components of the team.
Here are top 10 midfielders in world football.
10. Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
Despite being young, Hazard has amazing talents. He deserves to be on my list because of his amazing potential, and the experience he has shown, although he lacks it, during his time at Chelsea.
9. Yaya Toure (Manchester City)
Toure may be unexpected for this list, but the towering, defensive midfielder has a unique ability of powering through defenders like they're not even there. As well as this, the Ivorian is good at making a last ditch challenge too.
8. David Silva (Manchester City)
The City man has the eye for a special pass, and his intricate play allows him to dart between defenders like they aren't even there. Despite having a disappointing season last campaign, he still makes my list.
7. Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)
The new boy at the Emirates has bags of talent, but has been overshadowed by his teammates at the Bernabeu. The ex-Madrid man has more assists that Messi, and almost as many as Xavi and Andres Iniesta combined.
6. Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)
The selfish winger has the confidence to charge through defences and cut in on his left foot, delivering powerful left footed strikes. He is the world record transfer, arriving at Madrid for a staggering fee of £85.6m.
5. Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich)
The German is undoubtedly one of the best all round midfielders at the moment, and potentially of all time. He has always played in important games for Munich, and never fails to deliver a solid performance for his team.
4. Xavi (Barcelona)
The Barcelona playmaker has now gone past the 30 year old mark, and his form is decreasing. However this doesn't stop him from delivery perfect passing accuracy and solid performances for Spanish giants Barcelona.
3. Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona)
The ex-Arsenal man has bags of talent, and has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, however vowed to stay at Barcelona. Fabregas has always been a talent, and delivers that special something when his team need him.
2. Andres Iniesta (Barcelona)
One of the most consistent players of all time, Iniesta always stands out as a special player, even at Barcelona. He has always been behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in competitions, but is not far behind.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
I know what you're thinking - Ronaldo isn't a striker - his main position is on the left wing, which is a midfield position. I don't have to justify why this player is on my list. If Messi wasn't around, then he would have won every Ballon D'or since he started playing.
