After all of the fuss and negativity towards Arsene Wenger for not splashing any of the cash that was available to him - he made one of the biggest signings of the summer.

The Frenchman was under scrutiny after failing to bring any big names to the club, despite having a large wad of money to spend.

Arsenal have been linked with many big names over the summer such as Luis Suarez, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain - but they have failed to sign any of these players. With Higuain joining Napoli and the others are staying at their respected clubs.

Wenger shocked the fans by smashing the clubs record transfer fee by £27million to bring in German midfielder, Mesut Özil, for a club record £42.5 million.

The German playmaker had been seemingly pushed down the pecking order at Real Madrid after the signings of Asier Illarramendi for £32 million and Isco for £23 million, adding to an already highly competed position.

Özil has joined Arsenal to pursue his dream to play in the Premier League in search of first-team football, as well as maintaining Champions League football.

He adds to an already world class midfield with the likes of Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla, the one part of the team which hadn't really needed improving.

Now that the window has closed and Arsenal have splashed the cash - many football fans are starting to ponder whether Wenger made the correct decision in signing Özil.

Don't get me wrong, he is one of the world's best players. But Arsenal's midfield did not need to be strengthened, however, their defence and attack do need reinforcements.

Arsenal's main goal threat, Olivier Giroud, has admitted as well that Arsenal needed to bring in another striker, due to the fact that after him and Theo Walcott, Arsenal are light in attacking options with the injury of Lukas Podolski.

Arsenal's defence is also light in numbers with captain Thomas Vermaelen inured as well as Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson being young and inexperienced. Should Arsene Wenger have strengthened his attack and defence? Only time will tell.
