Toby Alderweireld claims to have turned down a late approach from Liverpool in favour of joining Atletico Madrid.

Alderweireld, 24, who can operate at centre-half and right-back joined the Spanish outfit on transfer deadline day from Dutch giants Ajax for a undisclosed fee reported to be in the £5.9m region.

Despite widespread interest from Liverpool and Kop boss Brendan Rodgers, Alderweireld admitted that he had already made his mind up after interest from Atletico first sparked, with the Belgian international claiming that Los Colchoneros appeared to want him more.

Tottenham had also been linked with a move for the former Ajax man along with Newcastle, however their interest failed to materialise and he completed a move to Spain.

He told the Spanish press following his arrival at Atletico, as reported on Sky Sports: "The club have been following me now for two or three weeks, and you could see they really wanted me.

"That is why I turned down approaches from other teams. Liverpool, for example, appeared in the last few days, but I had already taken my decision.

"The truth is that Atletico made a huge effort to convince me."

Despite missing out on Alderweireld, Rodgers responded by signing defensive duo Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori from PSG and Sporting Lisbon respectively.
