Plymouth Argyle overcame a strong Cheltenham squad on Tuesday after a thrilling match in The Football League Trophy first round. Argyle are through to the second round after securing the victory with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory after the game ended 3-3 after the final whistle.
Plymouth will have been the more confident side going into the game after beating Cheltenham 3-1, at Cheltenham's home ground, just over two weeks ago in League Two.
However, Plymouth suffered an early setback as Steven Gillespie fired a right-footed shot past Argyle keeper Jake Cole in only the sixth minute to give Cheltenham an early 1-0 lead. Plymouth did manage to stage a comeback ten minutes later and went ahead 2-1, Rommy Boco and Lewis Allessandra scoring two goals in two minutes to give the Pilgrims the lead going into the break.
New Plymouth signing Hamza Bencherif scored just before the hour mark to give Plymouth a 3-1 lead, and a comfortable two goal cushion. Just two minutes later Curtis Nelson was sent off for serious foul play and Steven Gillespie scored the resulting penalty to give him his second goal of the game.
Cheltenham clearly had the upper hand as they equalized in the 67th minute through Jason Taylor. Plymouth managed to battle through the last twenty minutes with the score staying at 3-3, therefore taking the game to a penalty shoot-out.
Plymouth's summer signing Marvin Morgan scored the winning penalty to award Plymouth a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory and a place in the second round of The Football League Trophy.
