Everton are set to begin talks over a new contract for star man Leighton Baines.
The timing of the move to tie down Baines on a new contract comes as a surprise, with Manchester United trying to prise Everton's star asset for much of the summer, following a £12million bid in January and a joint £28million bid for the England star and Marouane Fellaini which Everton branded 'insulting and derisory'.
The latter eventually made the move to Old Trafford on Deadline Day, but with a new contract being planned for 28-year-old Baines, Everton will be hoping the proceeding transfer windows don't bring a transfer fiasco for Everton's star players yet again.
However, Baines could still be the recipient of bids in the following transfer window in January. The former Wigan man has two years reaming on his contract and new boss Roberto Martinez now believes this is the right time to begin contract discussions with any player coming toward the end of their tenure at the club, not just Baines.
"When the window is open I think it's the wrong time to speak about those things and so we hadn't discussed it," he told reporters.
"But now the window is closed, we are going to look into all the players in the squad and see where their contracts are up to.
"Then, individually, we will look to address that. It would just have created more instability if we had done that while the window was open."
