Footballers have historically been criticised by the media as being thick and although that's not often the case, sometimes they just really don't help themselves...

"I couldn't settle in Italy - it was like living in a foreign country." Ian Rush explains after failing to settle at Juventus following a move from Liverpool.

"The only thing I have in common with George Best is that we come from the same place... play for the same club... and were discovered by the same man," said a modest Norman Whiteside.

"I'd like to play for an Italian club, like Barcelona," once said ex-Aston Villa player Mark Draper. Didn't fancy a move to Spanish giants, AC Milan then Mark?

"Messi can do amazing things, but anything he can do, Joe can do as well, if not better,” said Steven Gerrard on Joe Cole when he signed for Liverpool.

The list could go on for David Beckham but we'll just use two of his many blasts from the past...

"Alex Ferguson is the best manager I've ever had at this level. Well, he's the only manager I've actually had at this level. But he's the best manager I've ever had."

"Well, I can play in the centre, on the right and occasionally on the left side." Beckham's response after being asked if he was a volatile player on the pitch. I think you thought versatile didn't you, Becks?
