It was a tough summer transfer window for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal fans, up until deadline day, when they managed to secure the signature of a world class number ten in Mesut Özil.
Özil cost Arsenal around about £42.5 million, smashing their previous transfer record, and with good reason. Özil is one of the best number tens in world football, gathering a huge number of assists during his time with Real Madrid, and he is sure to be one of the Premier League’s best players once he settles.
Özil is an amazing player, however it is widely recognised by pundits and fans all over, that he was not the type of player desperately needed by Arsenal, as they already have talented attacking midfielders in Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere. Arsenal were more in need of a left winger, due to Oxlade Chamberlain’s injury, and a holding midfielder. Ultimately Özil was a
big money signing to appease the fans after a disappointing transfer window.
That being said, Özil will be a key player for Arsenal in the coming years, with his ability to pick a pass, and with striker Olivier Giroud on form, Arsenal have the potential to score a lot of goals in this campaign.
However it is the long term benefits Arsenal could reap from having a player like Özil in their ranks. For years, Arsenal didn’t really have the squad to attract big players to join their cause, however with the arrival of Özil, Arsenal may have more of a chance to attract the big players from all over Europe to join them.
Özil was one of the top performers in the Spanish league last season, and a lot of players will know that. Now that Arsenal have him, more top players could be persuaded to join Arsenal because they now have a world class talent, something which they previously lacked, and over the years, they could really build a strong squad, capable of challenging for titles, which is what Özil said he was there to do.
The fact that Arsenal spent so much money on Özil, could show Europe’s top performers that they really mean business and want to challenge for titles just as they did many years ago.
Needless to say, Arsenal have a better chance of attracting top players to join them with players like Özil In their team, and one day, should everything go well for Arsenal they could become a European giant again.
